[Basidiomycota > Agaricales > Entolomataceae > Entoloma . . . ] Entoloma species 02 by Michael Kuo, 30 October 2024 This North American West Coast entolomatoid mushroom has a sticky, blue-gray to purple-gray cap, and a white stem that develops grayish to bluish hues. It is a fairly large mushroom, reminiscent of a Tricholoma in stature, with a mealy odor. The species described here is very similar to the European species Entoloma bloxamii, but is phylogenetically distinct, according to Morgado et al. (2013); the authors called the species "Entoloma bloxamii–NA" and said they "prefer to wait for further collections to give a full description and propose this taxon as a new species." Although an intervening online publication, without peer review, gave the species a name (see discussion), I will defer using it until the hypothesis is supported in an actual scientific publication. Thanks to Mila Visser 't Hooft for collecting, documenting, and preserving Entoloma species 02 for study; her collection is deposited in The Herbarium of Michael Kuo. Description: Ecology: Saprobic; growing alone or gregariously under various trees in mixed coastal redwood forests; winter; northern California and the Pacific Northwest. The illustrated and described collections are from California. Cap: 5–10 cm across; convex becoming broadly convex, broadly bell-shaped, or nearly flat; bald; sticky when fresh; deep bluish gray to lilac gray or blackish gray; the pigment sometimes breaking up to create a streaked appearance; the margin not lined. Gills: Attached to the stem by means of a notch; close; short-gills frequent; white, becoming pink as spores mature. Stem: 5–7 cm long; 1–2 cm thick; tapered to base; dry; bald or a little pruinose; whitish or bluish gray; basal mycelium white. Flesh: White; unchanging when sliced. Odor: Mealy. Spore Print: Pink. Microscopic Features: Spores 6–10 x 5–9 µm; angular; 6- or 7-sided, with shallow angles; more or less subglobose overall, with a narrowed apicular end; smooth; hyaline in KOH or ammonia; inamyloid. Basidia 38–50 x 6–8 µm; clavate; 4-sterigmate. Hymenial cystidia not found. Pileipellis an ixocutis; elements 2–6 µm wide, smooth, hyaline to yellowish in KOH; clamp connections present. Subcutis elements 5–15 µm wide; septate; smooth; hyaline to brown in KOH. REFERENCES: (Arora, 1986; Largent, 1994; Morgado et al., 2013; Desjardin, Wood & Stevens, 2015; Siegel & Schwarz, 2016.)
