Entoloma species 02

by Michael Kuo, 30 October 2024

This North American West Coast entolomatoid mushroom has a sticky, blue-gray to purple-gray cap, and a white stem that develops grayish to bluish hues. It is a fairly large mushroom, reminiscent of a Tricholoma in stature, with a mealy odor.

The species described here is very similar to the European species Entoloma bloxamii, but is phylogenetically distinct, according to Morgado et al. (2013); the authors called the species "Entoloma bloxamii–NA" and said they "prefer to wait for further collections to give a full description and propose this taxon as a new species." Although an intervening online publication, without peer review, gave the species a name (see discussion), I will defer using it until the hypothesis is supported in an actual scientific publication.

Thanks to Mila Visser 't Hooft for collecting, documenting, and preserving Entoloma species 02 for study; her collection is deposited in The Herbarium of Michael Kuo.
