[ Basidiomycota > Agaricales > Amanitaceae > Amanita . . . ] Amanita species 07 by Michael Kuo, 8 July 2025 Here is a possibly undescribed Amanita that is similar to Amanita submaculata in its streaked, brown cap, its association with oaks, and its overall stature. However, it differs in at least three ways: first, it stains red much more eagerly than submaculata (which only rarely blushes, and is shy about it); secondly, its ring is situated in the middle of the stem, rather than at the very top; and thirdly, the universal veil (appearing as warts on the cap and fragments on the lower stem) is yellowish, rather than whitish to grayish. I find no significant microscopic differences between species 07 and submaculata, and the collection described here has not been subjected to DNA sequencing. Amanita species 07 might correspond to one of the North American "blushers" in the Amanita rubescens species group—but the brown, streaked cap pigment does not match the brassy yellow, non-streaked appearance of the rubescens caps, and the universal veil is far less prominent. Rod Tulloss's "Amanita sp-N47," represented by a single Connecticut collection made under pine, oak, and hemlock, may be the same entity as my species 07, based on Tulloss's description. Description: Ecology: Mycorrhizal with oaks or hickories; growing gregariously; summer; distribution unknown. The illustrated and described collection is from Illinois. Cap: 6–8 cm; planoconvex or nearly flat at maturity; dry; bald and shiny; brown over the center and paler brown elsewhere, with the pigment radially streaked; with a few scattered, small, yellowish warts; the margin becoming slightly lined. Gills: Free from the stem; close; with occasional short-gills; white. Stem: 6–9 cm long; 1–1.5 cm thick; equal above a very slight basal bulb; with a collapsing, fragile, whitish ring attached at roughly the midpoint of the stem; whitish; bruising and satining pink to pinkish red, especially near the base; base featuring loosely adhering flaky patches of yellowish universal veil material. Flesh: White; not staining on exposure, or staining slowly red. Odor: Not distinctive. Chemical Reactions: KOH negative on cap surface. Spore Print: White. Microscopic Features: Spores 7–9 x 5–7 µm; broadly ellipsoid; smooth; amyloid. Basidia 27–32 x 6–10 µm; clavate; 4-sterigmate. Hymenial cystidia not found. Subhymenium inflated-ramose. Pileipellis an ixocutis. REFERENCES: Herb. Kuo 08082005. This site contains no information about the edibility or toxicity of mushrooms. |
