Collector's Notes: This morel was one of five growing under the last standing elm in a small grove. The tree was dead and most of the bark had fallen off. No other trees were within a significant distance except for other elms that had died and fallen over. The vegetation was mostly grasses and some mayapples and other broadleaf plants. I chose this fruiting to study because of the lack of other nearby variables to consider. I carefully cleared away some of the vegetation and brushed away the soil to expose the elm's root structure. Two of the five mushrooms were in contact with large roots at the surface. The other three all had smaller roots running under their bases within 4 inches of the surface. . . . This area was one of the first in the U.S. to be hit by Dutch elm disease. The morels in this area have been adapting to this new element in their environment for 50 years.

Note, 2012: Collection not sequenced; not cited in Kuo et al., 2012.
