Collector's Notes: ECOLOGY: Burn site at ~ 4,000 ft.; burned lightly in summer 2003; fir zone. MORPHOLOGY: Specimen several days old; sent fresh by overnight mail. Fairly well preserved but with some small signs of mold. Pileus 7 cm x 4 cm; obovoid; blunty pointed; with a rim 2 mm wide and 2 mm deep at the point of attachment to the stipe; pits and ridges vertically arranged, with most channels running the whole length of the pileus; about 21 vertical ridges transecting the diameter at the widest point. Ridges finely velvety; gray and blunt becoming black and sharp. Pits velvety; gray with perhaps a hint of pale olive; up to 12 mm deep. Stipe sliced above the base by the collector, but at least 3 cm wide and 3 cm long; subclavate; ribbed at the apex and perhaps at the base, occasionally in the midsection; velvety; grayish to whitish; appearing to bruise pale tan, or perhaps merely discoloring; thickly chambered with white flesh from base to point of attachment to pileus. Interior surface white and pimply-velvety. Odor musty. Spore print released on scanner glass: pale orange-yellow. Spore print from collector: pale orange-yellow. Ammonia negative on interior surface; negative on hymenium; yellowish, then negative on stipe surface. KOH negative on interior surface; negative on hymenium; pinkish gray on tan areas of stipe surface, negative on white areas. Iron salts pale bluish gray on interior surface; negative or pale grayish on hymenium; pale bluish gray on stipe surface. Asci 8-spored; 165-215 x 14-15 m. Spores elliptical; 16-21 x 11-14 m.
