Collector's Notes: Black morel. Morphology: One of 4 morels growing together. All appeared the same. Stem was hollow, beige colored with tiny white granular looking spots. Cap had dark ridges separating lighter colored pits. Pits were roughly aligned in vertical rows. Habitat: Abandoned apple orchard. Four morels were growing within a 2 foot diameter circle in a mossy area under a dead apple tree. This mushroom was about 2 feet from the trunk of the dead apple tree. The only other trees within about 15 feet were another dead apple tree, 2 living apple trees and a red maple. The weather had been cold (highs in the 40s) and rainy for 2 days previously. The soil temperature under that tree had been in the low 40s on May 11.
