Collector's Notes: Black Morel. Site Description: South facing slope of ridge, elevation 1,400 ft. Mixed hardwoods, Maple, ash, hickory and beech 50-60 years of age. Occasional cedar and fir (old growth excess of 200yr.) Grade of slope 60+ degrees, numerous slumps on hillside where mushrooms appeared on or at edges of disturbed soil. Area of fruiting approximately 1000sq/ft along the same elevation. Environmental Conditions: Air temperature 12 degrees C. Soil temperature 13 degrees C. Creek and runoff water 10 degrees C. Local pollen count for Poplar was high and Birch/Maple Mod. Other Plants: Grasses and moss where soil was stable, Disciotis venosa (cup morel) was prevalent throughout the area. Soil: Sandy loam to depth of 8 inches, L layer mostly deciduous leaf and twigs, F layer indistinguishable, H layer 1/8th inch where bound in moss roots, A layer 2 to non existent in slump areas, B&C undetermined.
