Collector's Notes: These Morels were growing in the deeply shaded western side of my pottery studio. The rain runoff from part of the property and studio roof goes around my firewood pile. Sometimes I have emptied fireplace wood ash in that area too. There is a good amount of decomposed organic material from years of leaf fall. A majority of the matter is from cedar and oak trees.
This is the first time I have noticed these mushrooms in such large quantities. Our area experienced the a severe drought last summer followed by a colder than normal winter and plentiful spring rains that have brought the wild flowers and mushrooms out in spectacular fashion over the past few days.
