Lakeview Park, Charleston. Resupinate in patches on a hardwood log (probably sugar maple) 2 inches in diameter, with bark still adnate; with ash, sugar maple, oaks, and various hardwood understory trees present. Crust less than 1 mm thick; patches 2-28 cm across. Surface dark brownish purple and areolate, except near margin, where there is a dark bright purple zone, slightly wrinkled--and a pale purple marginal zone, slightly wrinkled. Odorless. KOH dark gray to black. Hyphae fairly thick-walled; hyaline to brown in KOH; smooth; not clamped. Cystidia prominent; brown in KOH; up to about 225 x 12.5 microns; thick-walled; lanceolate, developing a Melanoleuca-like harpoon encrustation at the apex.
