Collector's Notes: Daytime temps last 7 days 60-70 degrees; about 10" rain in previous 18 days. Specimen appeared quite mature, as were the other two nearby. Found growing from the cut bank of an old (75-125 yrs.) logging road, Mature forest, dominated by oak; much hickory, some elm, maple, poplar, and birch.

Microcscopic examination of collection. Exsiccatum is about half an ascocarp, appearing well preserved. KOH mount. Paraphyses orange-brown, with granular content; clavate to (more frequently) capitate or subcapitate; averaging about 120 X 7 µ. Asci hyaline; up to 240 X 24 µ or more; 8-spored. Mature spores (outside asci) more or less elliptical; usually with one large central oil droplet and scattered amorphous tiny droplets; hyaline; 27-31 X 15-16 µ excluding ornamentation; with 2-5 rodlike projections (up to 2 µ long) near each end and irregular smaller (up to .5 µ) projections or sheathlike material along the sides. Spores in asci mostly lacking apical projections; smooth; subfusoid to nearly ellipctical.
