Boletellus russellii

[ Basidiomycetes > Boletales > Boletaceae > Boletellus . . . ]

by Michael Kuo

This striking and uncommon bolete is found in summer and fall in eastern North America (and apparently in southern Arizona), growing under conifers and hardwoods--especially oaks. Its long and skinny, shaggy, coarsely reticulate stem, together with its yellow pore surface and its dry cap, separate it from most look-alikes. Under the microscope, the spores of Boletellus russellii are grooved and wrinkled (which is why the species is placed in Boletellus), but microscopic analysis is probably not needed for accurate identification.

Description:

Ecology: Mycorrhizal with oaks and other hardwoods, or occasionally with conifers; growing alone or scattered; summer and fall; widely distributed in eastern North America (perhaps also occasional in the southwest).

Stem: 10-20 cm long; 1-2 cm. thick; more or less equal; deeply furrowed and lacerated longitudinally (coarsely reticulate); solid; reddish brown to brown.

Flesh: Pale yellow throughout; not bruising when exposed.

Odor and Taste: Not distinctive.

Chemical Reactions: Ammonia reddish on cap; negative on flesh; KOH negative on cap, negative to reddish on flesh; iron salts olive gray on cap, negative on flesh.
