Crepidotus mollis

by Michael Kuo, 3 August 2023

Flabby and bald (kinda like me), Crepidotus mollis is a relatively large Crepidotus species found on the deadwood of hardwoods across the globe. Its flesh is composed of gelatinized hyphae, which gives it a rubbery, flabby texture. In the strictest sense, Crepidotus mollis has a bald cap, while Crepidotus calolepis has a fibrillose-scaly cap but is otherwise virtually identical (leading some mycologists to treat the latter as Crepidotus mollis var. calolepis). The fibrils on the cap surface of Crepidotus calolepis, when viewed under the microscope, are composed of brownish and often encrusted hyphae—but the bald cap of Crepidotus mollis features only colorless, smooth hyphae.

Crepidotus alabamensis and Crepidotus fraxinicola are synonyms.

Description:

Cap: 2–6 cm across; semicircular or fan-shaped; bald; moist or dry; pale brownish, becoming whitish; hygrophanous; the margin faintly lined at maturity.

Gills: Close; radiating; short-gills frequent; when young whitish; becoming dull brown with maturity.

Stem: Absent.

Flesh: Rubbery; whitish to brownish; unchanging when sliced.

Odor: Not distinctive.

Spore Print: Medium brown.

Microscopic Features: Spores 6–8.5 x 4–5.5 µm; ellipsoid to subamygdaliform; smooth; thick-walled; brownish golden in KOH; inamyloid. Basidia 17–20 x 4–5 µm; subclavate; 4-sterigmate. Pleurocystidia not found. Cheilocystidia 30–40 x 3–6 µm; fusiform, lageniform, clavate, cylindric, and subcapitate; smooth; thin-walled; hyaline in KOH. Pileipellis a cutis; elements 3–8 µm wide, hyaline in KOH, smooth. Subcuticular zone of gelatinized hyphae. Clamp connections present.
