by Michael Kuo Habitat: Typically on wet ground; usually in mixed stands with other trees; growing east of the Great Plains in the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic states. Stature: 40-70 feet high; to 3 feet in diameter; with an open and irregular crown; lower branches drooping. Leaves: 5-7 inches long; with broad, gentle teeth, or sometimes with shallow lobes; dark green and shiny on top, paler (often silvery or nearly whitish) and somewhat hairy below. Bark: Dark brown; composed of long, scaly ridges or sections. Acorns: Sweet; to 1 1/4 inches long; enclosed for about 1/3 in a hairy cup; stem quite long (1-4 inches). |
